MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Established a tissue culture laboratory for the in vitro cultivation of malaria parasites and various cell lines in the Division of Biochemistry & Biotechnology, NICD, Delhi.

  • Standardized almost all immuno biological techniques including hybridoma technique for the production of monoclonal antibodies against malaria antigens.

  • Maintained different species of malaria parasite in vivo and in vitro for the production of stage specific antigens.

  • The role of macrophages in malaria immunity was studied in experimental animals. It could be possible to postulate from the work on “Immunological studies on the role of Macrophages in Experimental Malaria” (Thesis work) that macrophages are one of the main reasons for the early death of Plasmodium berghei infected mice, since animals with suppressed macrophage functions, survived the malarial infections for a longer period of time.

  • A simple method was developed for the in vitro cultivation of macrophages in a serum free medium.

  • Successfully established the in vitro cultivation of pre-erythrocytic stages (liver stages) and short term in vitro cultivation of erythrocytic stages of Plasmodium vivax, for the first time in India.

  • Established Malaria Parasite Bank, as a National resource, at National Institute of Malaria Research, New Delhi. At present the Bank is maintaining a large number of adapted and non-adapted P. falciparum isolates and also P. vivax and P. malariae isolates collected from different geographical regions of India, along with a large number of non-human plasmodia as a centralized, supporting facility. The bank is also involved in screening of anti-malarial effect of medicinal plants.

  • Imparted training to a large number of research fellows, scientists and technical staff on malaria parasitology, in vitro cultivation of malaria parasites, in vitro drug sensitivity testing, cryopreservation and transportation of parasites, handling of non-human parasites etc.

  • Established a Malaria Parasite Bank and in vitro screening of medicinal plant extracts for its anti plasmodial property at University of Khartoum, Sudan.

  • Established the in vitro culture system of malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum and in vitro screening anti malarials at Regional Medical Research Centre, Port Blair, Andaman and at Dept. of Zoology and Biomedical Technology, University School of Sciences, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad
